New Pet

A new pet is a very exciting time!  Knowledge about your new pet and patience during this transition is essential to making this new family member a comfortable and pleasant event.

Puppies and Dogs
Puppies and dogs based on their age and personality may require several weeks to several months
to adjust to their new home.  It is very important during this period to establish consistent rules, verbal cues, routines, and schedules for the household.  If all those individuals helping with the care and love of the pet follow the same pattern, the canine will adapt much quicker.  During this adjustment period, your dog is learning its role in your family and your family is looking for the new pet to meet their
expectations.

Kittens and Cats
Kittens and cats based on their age and personality may adjust to their new home in a few short weeks.  A frightened or anxious feline may seek a quiet place to hide and observe the
household individuals and their activities.  A more confident feline will explore your home.  Felines are looking for their role in your family and your family will have expectations of the new pet.

Remember……
Y
our pet will most likely need to be taught its role in your family.  He or she may not understand some of the essential basics, even if it is an adult animal, like where to void (urinate and defecate), how to walk on a leash, how to be loved and show affection, and how to respond to different situations including pets, noise, adults, children, foods and toys. Patience, love, and commitment are crucial to make this a wonderful experience for everyone.
