Arbor day for Huntsville, AL

Animal Services Department

Spay/Neuter

Do all the pets have to be fixed?
Yes, all dogs and cats adopted from Huntsville Animal Services will be spayed or neutered prior to going to their new home. This will prevent our animals from contributing to the overpopulation problems of dogs and cats throughout this nation.

How do the pets get "fixed ?
All intact adopted dogs and cats are transported by our office to a participating veterinarian for sterilization surgery. If your vet is on the list of participating veterinarians, we will do everything possible to have your veterinarian perform the surgery. If your vet is not on the list, we will try to find the closest one to where you live.

What if it's a puppy or kitten?
Pediatric sterilization is very common. In fact, it is the preferred choice, as the pets recover quicker and better from the surgery. The babies are usually running around again within a day.

What if I don't have my pet fixed?
Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to adopt one of our pets. Spaying and neutering is the only way to alleviate the tragic over population of dogs and cats in our country.

Why is spaying & neutering so important?
Euthanasia is the #1 killer of dogs & cats. Each year, over 4.5 MILLION dogs and cats are euthanized by shelters. Allowing these animals to reproduce is a terrible tragedy. In ten years, one female cat and one male cat can be responsible for over 80 MILLION cats!!! The overpopulation problem in America can only be resolved by spaying and neutering our companion animals.

There are also numerous health benefits to having your pet altered. For more information regarding spaying and neutering, contact the Humane Educator at Huntsville Animal Services.
